A very important difference among brands is filtration method,
Most central vacuum systems sold in America use Ametek motors. Ametek specifically states in their warranty "typical signs of abuse [including] dirty motors, failure of which was caused by inadequate filtration will not be considered in-warranty failures". This means that the engineers of the central vacuum systems should design a unit that would not allow dirt or debris from getting into motor fans or bearings or to do so would void Ametek warranty.
Modern Day has designed their system with the proper filtration using the Bag Filtering System (as seen below). This system provides the greatest surface area for the air to breathe which also allows the greatest airflow so that you maintain maximum vacuum performance.
